The Belclare is a white-faced sheep and is noted for its ability to produce twin lambs. Belclare Sheep were developed by Teagasc, the Irish agriculture and food development authority, to improve prolificacy of the Irish sheep population. It gets its name from the village of Belclare in Co. Galway, Ireland.
The breed was formed by bringing together into one population, flocks with proven ability for producing a high litter sizes under intensive sheep production conditions.
“To my mind the growth rates, sales pattern and carcass quality of these lambs indicated that prolific Belclare cross ewes can produce quality as well as quantity”.
Tom Egan, Teagasc
